Suggestions Please!

A couple of weeks ago I found this checkerboard at a yard sale for $1.... of course I just had to have. I feel like it is just plain on the sides and it would look better if there was something painted on it...any suggestions.
The scoop was for $3...again any suggestions how I should decorate with it...the handle is gone so there is a whole in the wood so it could either sit or lay....I would so greatly appreciate any help you could contribute.
I will share the before and after photo when finished. Thanks so much!
Have a great day!
Kathy

Good Morning! Love your finds! If the checkerboard original? If so, I would not paint anything on it. They are quite valuable!

About your scoop, how about adding an electric candle inside it and running the cord out through the hole. Then you can fill in with pip berries or other little things. You could hang it in a place where you could conceal the cord. I think that would be very cute.

What wonderful finds!!! You could stencil a mustare or b.red star on either side of the checkerboard but myself I would leave as is. I have a scoop like that, it still has a handle though, in it I have 3 large ragballs that I made from an old rag rug. I like Carolyn's suggestion though better:) Can't wait to see pics of what you do with them.

Stars :) I see red stars on the sides. I have a checkerboard that I made for myself that hangs on the wall and it has white stars. Just tiny ones in a row :)

I have a weird scoop that I could never figure out what to do with. It actually lays on the counter in the bathroom and holds our hand towel, folded up!

Great finds!

Hi Kathy,
I came across your blog and love it. I was going to suggest putting a flower arrangement in the scope but reading your other suggestions forget that, I like those.
Would it be ok if I add your blog to my blogsites?

Hi Kathy, love all the goodies you got. Your scoop is a real treasure. Here were some ideas,(ok some good some dumb), how about a little straw and a fake chicken with eggs in it. Hang it in the kitchen with fake veggies, or eggs in it. Or...use it in the bathroom filled with toilet paper!!!! Or, ok how about towels and cute little soaps. Or old fashioned soap, and a couple of old fashioned hand towels made out of homespun in the laundry room, with a few clothespins! Ok, I'm tired from all that brainstorming. Can't wait to see what you will do!!!

OK if you can't think of anything you could put hubby's folded underwear in it!!!

I love your finds. I thik red stars would be great like Rondel suggested and the candle light and pipberries like Carolyn said would look great in the scoop.

Hey Kathy,
I clicked on your picture to try to make it bigger so I could get a better look at your gameboard, but your picture didn't get bigger.
It "looks" like it could be original, but it's really hard to say without seeing it in person. You could take it to your local museum and ask the curator to take a look at it, or an antique shop. But make sure you let them know that you are NOT interested in selling it first. Some people could tell you wrong just to get their hands on it. I would personally try the curator first, or check your library for books about antique gameboards. That might help also. If it is indeed an original antique, it could be worth quite a lot of money.
Some things you can do for yourself, smell it. Does it smell like wood stain or paint? An old piece should not have those smells. How is it put together? nails or pegs? If it has nails, are they clean, rusty, blackened, square or round head? What about the nail holes? An old piece made with nails should have nice black oxidation and some staining around them. The staining should be irregular and not all the same. Sometimes older pieces have newer repairs too, so that oxidation is key to finding out if it is the real deal or not.
I hope this helps. Sorry I had to answer your questions here, but I didn't have another way to contact you.
And I'm not an expert either, but have always loved learning about antiques. I still have much to learn. :)

Blessings,
Carolyn

I agree with Carolyn at CC, if it is an original gameboard, leave it be. However, if not, I'm with Leslie, I'm a star freak!!!!

As for the scoop, in the winter I would fill it full of pinecones and greenery, in the fall, mini pumpkins and gourds, in the spring, I have to think about that one. Maybe the canble would be handy for spring and summer!!

I hope you don't mind, I've added you to my blogroll!

Oh I think the game board is perfect the way it is! Don't fuss it up with something that could go out of style! How about just a chunky candle and dried rosehips in the scoop so you don't alter it's perfect form either? Great finds!!

Love your little dress. So cute and the extra long swing - what a great idea!
